Many people cannot live without music in their lives. Music is a way for people to escape their daily struggles and let go. Whether it is playing an instrument or simply listening to a song, music allows people to relax and create beautiful rhythms. Taking away someone’s ability to play/listen to music would be like taking away part of their life. Music is not only a hobby, but it is a career for many people. Without music, many would feel incomplete.

 

In my life, music is very important to me. My family has always been very musical playing instruments like the flute, piano, ukulele and guitar through generations. I wanted to portray a physical representation of what life would look like without music. The background of my photograph is a man without any instrument, yet he is holding his hands in a way that looks like he should be playing a guitar. The photo is black and white showing the more negative tone of the photo. In the photo overlayed on top, there is a man holding a guitar in color. The photo with the guitar is much more vibrant with a positive tone. I wanted to show how much light and happiness music can bring to someone. The photo with the guitar is fading in to look like it is bringing color to the man's life.

 

I struggled a lot taking this photo. Originally I planned on using photoshop to remove the guitar. After doing many attempts, my message of music changing your life was not coming across. Then I tried the idea of overlaying the two photos which worked much better. It was difficult to keep the characters hands in a similar spot so the guitar would fit in the under layer. I wanted to move the hands slightly so it would look like the character was in motion playing the guitar.
