Ironic

Across the united states, people, including myself, need coffee on a daily basis. It is what wakes them up and gives them energy to take on the day. My entire family cannot function without it. It is crazy to me how dependent we are on it nowadays. My photograph portrays the irony of coffee. As I looked in magazines and watched commercials I noticed how coffee can at times be ironic. In these ads, people were asleep, yet holding coffee. I thought this was very ironic because coffee is something that is meant to wake you up. In the ads, it seemed to me as if it was doing the exact opposite. In my photograph, I chose to portray this concept, yet in a more exaggerated way.

Capturing this photo was difficult. I went through many trial and error phases to get my final photograph. The concept of this photo was to have the coffee cup practically empty, but with a little bit remaining in the cup. This adds to the irony because the coffee cup is empty, which means they drank the entire cup, yet still the character in the photograph is insanely tired. This angle was very difficult to capture. I at first tried to shoot an aerial view. I thought that way, you could see the small amount of coffee in the photo and still understand my concept. After examining these images, I realized how important the characters face in the photo was. The original photos did not tell the story that I wanted them too. After reshooting my images with facial expressions and still being able to see the coffee, I feel that the audience will understand my photograph much easier.
