Artist Statement

The title of this artwork is “Space Between.” The idea behind this artwork is based off of a young girl. In her life when times get tough she goes to the hammock in her backyard. This hammock is where she goes to think and reflect. This image is capturing a time when she was angry with herself. The space in between the girl and a mirrored image of herself shows how uneasy she is feeling and how deep in thought she is.

To create the panorama, we first had to shoot our images. This process was difficult because when shooting, each picture had to be lined up perfectly. After processing the film, photos were chosen. In the dark room, we had to print out one image. Each image after that had to match up to the exact contrast and brightness as the original photo. After successfully printing 4 pictures, they had to be cut and aligned to create the final panorama.

The panorama gives a broader depth of field. Because the image is more spread out, you can see how far away the two girls are from each other. Also, the long hammock gives you the sense that the girl is unhappy and dissatisfied with her life at the time. I think panoramas are a great way to tell a story than a normal picture. In a panorama there is more background space to tell more about the setting.

Throughout the process there were many errors. The hardest part was matching the values of the photographs. Some of my photos had completely different lighting than others. I found it hard to match these while making sure the photo didn’t get too dark or too light. Also, after printing some of images didn’t end up being the right size. I had to go back and reprint photos more carefully so they were the correct size.
